Book: Sam Harris – The End of Faith

Audio CD

Although this is indeed a very good book, I was very disappointed by the fact that the audio version was narrated by some mr. Brian Emerson who made the whole masterpiece sound like a nine hour long commercial for vacuum-cleaners. Seriously, there could be no greater disparity betweenthe type of wit Sam Harris possesses and the type of voice that the narrator exhibits. Now, I have watched Sam Harris on lectures and I know that his ability to speak in front of a public is not the best of the best, but I believe it would still be far better if he had narrated his own book, despite whatever shortcomings his voice may have. Besides, narrating an audiobook is not as hard as public speaking, because you have ample chance to repeat any part which does not come out exactly right on the first try, so I do believe that the result would have been quite good.

Quote from the book:

…while religious people are not generally mad, their core beliefs absolutely are. This is not surprising, since most religions have merely canonized a few products of ancient ignorance and derangement and passed them down to us as though they were primordial truths.

and a fragment which I liked very much:

…the culture which has elevated belief in the absence of evidence to the highest of places in the hierarchy of human virtues. (Chapter 2, 38:50)

The duration of the audiobook was 9 hours and 16 minutes.
